4 reasons to see a show this Christmas

This week I was kindly gifted a ticket to see ‘The Emperor’s New Clothes’ at Theatre Royal Plymouth.  I sat in a busy crowd surrounded by a sea of families with a gleeful smile.  The show hadn’t even started but I was already buzzing, equipped with armfuls of sweets.  This adaptation was told by Stuff and Nonsense Theatre Company who used puppetry and clowning to tell the classic tale with charm and style.   Needless to say the show was met with rapturous applause after a throughly entertaining hour with jokes aplenty.  However, the fun didn’t stop there as the bloggers went on to meet the cast for a chat after the show.  We quizzed the lovely Jenny Harrold and Toby Gascoigne on everything from set to puppets and even managed to test our puppetry skills ourselves.  It’s safe to say we’re not quite at the level of Harrold and Gascoigne but it was a pleasure to meet them and learn more about the show.

Stuff and Nonsense have created a really beautiful production and once again proved that family theatre shouldn’t be underestimated.  Myself and the bloggers had a great time but the loveliest thing about this experience was watching families come together for an afternoon of entertainment during the festive season.  There are so many fantastic family shows on offer at Christmas and I think this is the perfect time to make the most of the great productions right on our doorstep.  So, if you need a little convincing, here are my top 4 reasons to see a family show this Christmas:

  1. It’s much more fun to watch exciting forms of theatre like aerial work and puppetry performed right in front of you.
  2. It’s a great opportunity to spend some time with your nearest and dearest.  Many people assume family shows are only entertaining for children.  However, I thoroughly believe a good family show will have everybody from grandma to grandson on the edge of their seats.
  3. It’s the perfect opportunity to get away from your [insert annoying technological device here].  If you’re going to put the digital screens down at any time, make sure you put it down at Christmas!  If you’re feeling like a real maverick, you could even turn your phone off.  I know! Crazy!
  4. Finally, as much as I love TV and film, there’s nothing better than watching a great live performance and sharing the experience with an audience.  A family show at Christmas will almost certainly give you that festive feeling and put you in high spirits for the rest of a happy and restful Christmas.

Thanks again to Stuff and Nonsense for letting me behave like a little kid.  You can catch ‘The Emperor’s New Clothes’ at Theatre Royal Plymouth until January 14th 2017.

*Although I was kindly gifted a ticket, as usual, my thoughts are completely my own.
